Mark Pope, the coach, took the microphone, informing fans he couldn't stay for his postgame radio show. He then briefly introduced himself at the podium for the press conference before handing it over to assistant coach Jason Hart, who was ready to head to the car. Pope announced, 'It's 22 minutes until Avery lands. I'm out, guys.' His daughter, Avery Pope, had embarked on a mission trip to El Salvador in the fall of 2024, returning to Lexington just minutes after the late-night game. Pope couldn't miss her return, and he, his wife Lee Anne, and their two other daughters, Shay and Ella, left Rupp early to ensure they arrived at the airport on time. With the help of local law enforcement and LEX security, they made it just in time. Pope humorously noted, 'Everything was legal; no speeding or parking on curbs. We had some help from the police, and we left before the game ended. Airport security also assisted, making it a magical and awesome experience.' Pope expressed his gratitude for the support, emphasizing the special nature of the moment for their family. While it wasn't their first experience with long-distance separation, as Ella had also been a missionary, it didn't make the distance any easier. They relied on weekly phone calls and letters as special treats, focusing on Avery's personal faith journey and her selfless desire to serve for over a year in a distant land. Pope described it as a commitment that required total dedication, and he felt incredibly proud of Avery's decision to step away from her college and tennis career. He shared his thoughts with KSR, stating, 'It’s a big word, and that really means something. It means something to say, 'Hey, I’m going to step away from my life for 17 months, give or take, and I’m going to give it to God, and I’m going to try and go serve people, and that’s the only agenda I’m going to have.' Avery's interactions with others during her mission trip provided Pope with a new perspective on life. He felt a sense of vicarious living as Avery encountered new people, different yet similar, and grew and served within a community far from home but close to her heart. They huddled together until the early hours of Thursday morning, sharing stories and cherishing their reunion. Pope mentioned, 'To have her back — this is a big change for her too, right? But it’s been really special.' He and Lee Anne were overjoyed to meet Avery at the airport and bring her home, even though Layla, their fourth daughter, couldn't be there due to her commitments as a dancer for the Utah Jazz. The exhaustion of the next day was worth the long-term core memory they would forever cherish. Pope concluded, 'I’m blessed with the most extraordinary partner in the world, Lee Anne, and she’s raised these four unbelievable girls. It’s awesome.'
