Fuel Prices in Portugal: A Drastic Increase Expected (2026)

Brace yourself, Portugal, because a significant fuel price hike is on the horizon!

As early as Monday, March 9th, 2026, Portuguese drivers could be facing a drastic increase in fuel costs. According to the National Association of Fuel Retailers (ANAREC), diesel and gasoline prices are predicted to surge by up to €0.10 per litre, a direct result of the unstable international markets.

The final price will be determined on Friday, but the current stock market trend is not looking good. It's a "significant worsening" situation, primarily driven by the escalating conflict in Iran and the subsequent pressure on oil prices.

This price surge is linked to the rise in Brent crude, the European market benchmark, which has increased by over 17% since last Friday. For the first time since the summer of 2024, Brent crude surpassed the $85 mark and has since stabilized above $83.

António Comprido, Secretary-General of EPCOL, believes that the impact on fuel prices in Portugal is almost inevitable. The national pricing mechanism is based on the average prices of the previous week, and with refined products (petrol and diesel) rising even faster than crude oil, the concern is justified.

So, what does this mean for consumers? Well, the implicit advice is to fill up your tanks before next Sunday. The sector is awaiting the final weekly closing figures, but the big question remains: will the Government intervene through taxation to ease this energy shock?

The Ministry of Finance has not confirmed any plans to adjust mitigation measures, such as reducing the ISP (Special Consumption Tax), to curb what is expected to be one of the sharpest weekly price increases in recent years. This has direct implications for the cost of living and inflation in Portugal.

And here's where it gets controversial... With the escalating conflict in Iran, is Portugal prepared for any potential attacks or repercussions? It's a question that deserves our attention and discussion.

So, what do you think, Portugal? Are we ready for these challenges, and what steps should we take to mitigate the impact on our daily lives? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Let's keep the conversation going and stay informed, together!
