Henadzi Kuzniatsou, an avid ice fisherman, had a slow day near his Utica home. In four hours, he managed to catch just two walleye and a yellow perch using shiners on a homemade tip-up in 12 feet of water. But little did he know, a real trophy was about to make an appearance.
As the flag on his tip-up popped, Kuzniatsou's initial reaction was one of mild curiosity. However, the fish on the other end had other plans, relentlessly unspooling line until Kuzniatsou realized he had a monster on the hook.
"I knew it was something special! And there it was, a true beauty!" exclaimed Kuzniatsou.
Indeed, the northern pike measured an impressive 43 inches and weighed a hefty 22 pounds. While it was a remarkable catch, Kuzniatsou revealed that he had caught even larger pike back in his homeland of Belarus.
This famously bony fish was a feast for Kuzniatsou's extended family. His wife skillfully fried their portion in an iron skillet, and Kuzniatsou shared a handy tip: "In a fish that size, the bones are easy to remove by hand."
