Following the U.S. military's operation in Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Oregon's Democratic representatives have voiced strong disapproval. Senator Ron Wyden stated that this intervention mirrors the global interventionism that Americans have rejected, citing the potential for another costly and life-threatening quagmire. He emphasized that such actions embolden authoritarian regimes and called for congressional oversight to prevent further unauthorized military actions.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Senator Jeff Merkley was also critical, arguing that the operation undermines U.S. credibility on the global stage and suggesting it's driven by interests in oil and regime change. He highlighted that the military action violated the Constitution, which requires Congressional approval for acts of war. He also noted that this action could have unexpected repercussions, potentially affecting U.S. authority in dealing with other nations. Merkley's concerns extend to the future management of Venezuela and the potential consequences for American lives and resources.
Most of Oregon's House members quickly echoed these sentiments.
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici asserted that the President's actions constitute an illegal act of war, done without Congressional authorization. She emphasized that while Maduro's leadership has been destructive, the unconstitutional regime change threatens greater instability. She also pointed out that Trump's actions could encourage similar actions from other countries.
Congresswoman Maxine Dexter echoed the concerns about the unconstitutionality of the military strike, highlighting that Congress has the sole authority to authorize acts of war. She criticized the lack of domestic support, clear rationale, and a post-intervention plan. Dexter believes the action undermines U.S. legitimacy and distracts from domestic priorities. She urged Congress to reassert its constitutional authorities.
Congresswoman Val Hoyle added her strong opposition to the military action, reiterating that the Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war. She condemned the overreach by the Administration and warned against another foreign war for oil.
Congresswoman Andrea Salinas condemned the overthrow of the Venezuelan government, calling it an act of war and expressing outrage at the President's sidestepping of Congressional authority.
