Telford's New Pool & Gym: Captain Matthew Webb Centre | Shropshire's Latest Leisure Development (2026)

A historic swim inspires a new aquatic adventure in Telford, West Midlands. The town is building a leisure center named after Captain Matthew Webb, the first person to swim the English Channel. But here's where it gets controversial...

The Captain Matthew Webb Swimming and Fitness Centre, located in Dawley, will feature a five-lane pool and a gym. This new facility, part of Telford Langley School, is set to open its doors next year.

The local council has identified a need for more swimming options in the area, estimating that the new pool will be used an impressive 150,000 times annually. And this is the part most people miss... the council is not only funding the project but will also operate the pool and fitness center once it's up and running.

Telford and Wrekin Council further explained that this development will allow Langley School to convert its health and fitness room into much-needed teaching space.

Last year marked the 150th anniversary of Captain Webb's historic swim across the channel, a feat he achieved on August 25, 1875. His famous quote, "Nothing great is easy," still resonates today. Webb, a true adventurer, later met his end while attempting to swim the Whirlpool Rapids below Niagara Falls in 1883.

So, what do you think? Is this a fitting tribute to Captain Webb's legacy? Or should we be focusing on other ways to honor his memory? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
