An exciting and bold reinterpretation of a classic horror film is finally set to hit theaters after experiencing some delays. Mike Flanagan, the creative mind behind the upcoming Exorcist film, has just announced a new release date for this much-anticipated project. Initially slated for release in March of this year, the seventh installment of this iconic horror franchise was postponed as Flanagan focused on finishing his Carrie television series.
"Production hasn’t yet begun on The Exorcist; we need to complete Carrie first," Flanagan shared with fans on Tumblr last year. "There’s no way it will be ready by next March. But there’s nothing to worry about!"
Now, according to a report from Variety, Universal Pictures has revealed that The Exorcist will officially premiere on March 12, 2027—almost an entire year later than initially planned.
This new film is being touted as a "radical new take" on the beloved original from 1973, which also bears the title The Exorcist. After the original’s massive success, grossing an impressive $441 million worldwide, four additional Exorcist films were released between 1977 and 2005. In 2021, Universal purchased the rights to create a fresh trilogy, beginning with The Exorcist: Believer, which ultimately fell through after director David Gordon Green departed from the sequel.
What makes Flanagan’s upcoming project particularly intriguing is that, while it will exist within the same universe as the original 1973 film, it won't serve as a direct continuation of Green's trilogy. Instead, it aims to introduce an entirely new narrative.
Flanagan expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "The Exorcist is one of the key reasons I became a filmmaker. It’s a privilege to explore something new, daring, and genuinely frightening within this universe."
In this highly anticipated movie, Scarlett Johansson and Jacobi Jupe will take on leading roles, with Flanagan acting as writer, director, and producer. The production team also includes David Robinson and Jason Blum, alongside executive producers Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek.
