Thirty years is a long time, but some musical reunions are worth the wait! The iconic alternative rock band, The Lemonheads, recently made a splashy return to late-night television, gracing The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with their presence. This marked their first appearance on a late-night program in three decades, a significant milestone for the band and a nostalgic treat for fans.
It felt like a trip back to 1992 as Jimmy Fallon himself joined Evan Dando and the band on stage. They performed "My Drug Buddy," a beloved track from their critically acclaimed 1992 album, It's a Shame About Ray. This album, and specifically their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson," is what many might recall as their biggest brush with mainstream fame.
But here's where it gets interesting: The Lemonheads aren't exactly the typical musical guests you'd expect on The Tonight Show these days, which often features newer artists catering to a Gen Z audience. Yet, for reasons we're absolutely thrilled about, the current iteration of The Lemonheads, led by Evan Dando, delivered a fantastic performance. Fallon introduced them with palpable excitement, noting they were performing a tribute to the late rock legend Roky Erickson from their new album, Love Chant. The audience's cheers were enthusiastic, even if the younger members might not have been intimately familiar with Erickson or the band's earlier work.
And this is the part most people miss: Fallon's genuine enthusiasm for the band was evident. He wasn't just hosting; he was a fan! He enthusiastically joined in on "My Drug Buddy," proving his deep appreciation for the band's seminal album. "Unbelievable!" he exclaimed afterward, "I'm honored. The Lemonheads! That's how you do it, right there!" This wasn't just a performance; it was a heartfelt moment of musical camaraderie.
This appearance is particularly noteworthy as it's reportedly their first late-night booking since they appeared on Late Night With Conan O'Brien in 1996. While Evan Dando did perform solo on Last Call With Carson Daly in 2003, this full band, late-night TV reunion is a much bigger deal.
Looking ahead, The Lemonheads have a busy schedule, with performances lined up in New York City, Colorado, and a tour across England in late September. If Jimmy Fallon is looking to continue this trend of bringing back influential bands from his formative years, we'd love to see him invite acts like Sebadoh, Buffalo Tom, The Afghan Whigs, and Superchunk. Perhaps even a dive into his childhood influences with bands like Dramarama or Camper Van Beethoven would be a fantastic way to go out with a bang, as late-night talk shows are indeed facing an uncertain future.
What do you think about this unexpected but welcome return of The Lemonheads to late-night TV? Are there other bands from the 90s you'd love to see make a similar comeback? Let us know in the comments below!
