UNC Swimming Lands Turkish Butterfly Star Defne Tanığ | 2026 Recruiting Class (2026)

The University of North Carolina is gearing up for an exciting future in women's swimming, as they welcome a new international talent to their 2026 recruiting class. But who is this rising star?

Defne Tanığ, a Turkish butterfly specialist, has verbally committed to the Tar Heels, and her addition is set to make waves in the pool. Hailing from Istanbul, Tanığ has already made a splash on the international stage, representing Turkey at the World Aquatics Junior Championships in Singapore.

Tanığ's versatility in the pool is impressive. She competed in the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly events, finishing 19th in both with times of 2:16.10 and 2:15.52, respectively. But that's not all; she also showcased her speed in the 4 x 100 medley relay, clocking a 1:02.20 split on the fly leg during the prelims.

And her talents don't stop there! Earlier in the summer, Tanığ reached the semifinals of the 200 fly at the LEN European Junior Championships, finishing 10th with a time of 2:14.59. She also demonstrated her all-around abilities in the 100 fly (35th, 1:02.13) and 400 IM (14th, 4:54.68).

Tanığ's personal bests are equally impressive. Her fastest 200 fly in long course was a swift 2:10.96, and she holds a strong 200 IM time of 2:18.02. But here's where it gets controversial—her short course 200 backstroke time of 2:08.57 is a real game-changer, and it's this versatility that makes her a valuable asset to any team.

When converted to SCY, Tanığ's times become even more intriguing. She would have ranked 11th in the 200 fly, 35th in the 100 fly, and 41st in the 200 IM at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships. These projections highlight her potential impact on the Tar Heels' roster.

Tanığ's commitment is a strategic move for North Carolina, especially considering the ACC conference's competitive nature. Her 200 fly skills could be a perfect fit for the Tar Heels, who scored 24 points in that event last year. But will she live up to these expectations?

Joining a talented group of recruits, including Kenzie Sellars, Morgan Farlow, Tiffany Murillo Jinete, Nehir Oner, and Catherine Pawlaski, Tanığ is set to contribute to the team's success.

This announcement is proudly sponsored by Fitter and Faster Swim Camps, who support swimmers' dreams of competing at the college level. Their commitment to excellence is evident through their innovative teaching platforms and elite-led camps across the USA and Canada.

What do you think about Defne Tanığ's potential impact on the Tar Heels' swimming program? Will she be a game-changer, or are there other recruits who might steal the spotlight? Share your thoughts in the comments!
